Here briefly, is Stephen Schwarzman’s story. In 2008 Stephen A. Schwarzman ranked fifty-three on Forbes’ list of America’s richest people, however it isn’t money that makes this story so fascinating but his undreamt of success in the finance sector and his patronage of the liberal arts. In the eighties Steve established the Blackstone Group with Peter Peterson, to start with it was a private-equity and financial advisory business. More recently, it has become a world leader in M&A, but note that he did not always head his own enterprise. Living for many of his adolescent years in Pennsylvania, Stephen commenced his early education in suburban Philadelphia. Then he went on to graduate from Yale University in 1969. He then selected a program of post-graduate study at the internationally esteemed Harvard Business school near Boston, MA. After concluding his higher education, Stephen began a career at Lehman Brothers investment bank. He was appointed a managing director at the age of thirty one.
Not only does Stephen give of his time to a broad range of not for profit organizations, but in addition he has also served as a part-time professor at Yale. He serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the JFK Center for the Performing Arts in NYC. What is more, he announced in Spring of 2008 that he was giving $100 million to the New York Public Library to help in funding their expansion. He is also one of the trustees of the library. Stephen is nowadays a role model to successful business people - last year he was described as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People on the planet in recognition of his many achievements. His meteoric rise in the financial world is surely stunning, not to mention the fact that his generous support of music and the liberal arts has inspired everybody around him. So America awaits Stephen’s next project. All in all, Stephen A. Schwarzman has, in retrospect, made a tremendous difference to both the business community and the world in general.
