The Guide to Buying Shoes That Don’t Hurt

Posted by admin on October 31st, 2008 — Posted in Civvies

It’s easy to tell when someone’s feet are killing them. It’s pretty fair to say we’ve all seen and experienced it. I’ve put together some tricks of the trade to make sure that experience is something from the past.

Quality Shoes

Quality shoes are an investment. However, paying more isn’t a guarantee of a good fit. A quality shoe will often be sewn instead of glued. Shoes should be lined in leather or suede, including the straps. Leather soles, and good padding are other indicators of a good shoe.

Comfortable Fit

This has been said many times, but we often conveniently forget it when faced with a shoe we love. Remember this; no one notices how pretty your shoes are when you can’t walk because your feet are obviously hurting.

Know Your Size

You must know yourself in order to find what works for you. Measure your foot. I don’t just mean in the store but also with measuring tape. It’s good to know the exact length of your foot when shopping online, especially with auctions where the insole measurement is provided.

It’s also a good idea to know the international measurements. A US 8 is also a 38, but may be a 39 in true European shoes. The link below provides a good international chart.

http://www.sunncity.com/Export/shoesize.html

Toe Room

The majority of shoes aren’t in the exact shape of your feet. You need some extra space for toe comfort. The ideal room is half an inch to one inch depending on the shape of the shoe. Pointy-toe shoes usually require up to 1-1/2 inches of extra space to fit comfortably. Aside from the immediate pain, squished toes can lead to corns and bunions.

Side Support

Flimsy side support is a pet peeve of mine (I have flat feet). My situation makes me sensitive, but I’ve come across so many shoes with no support at all. One test I learned is to gently try to bend the shoe in half (you’re testing the shoe, not damaging it). It should bend just before where the arch would start, but resist bending in the middle.

Heel Height

The ideal heel height for moving around comfortably is a half-inch to 2-1/2 inches. Many of the fashionable styles are at least three inches. Carrie of Sex & the City made this a trend. Just remember Sarah was in them for a limited amount of time. Let that be your guide; the higher the heel, the less time you should spend in the shoes.

Heel Width

The popular trend of skinny heels is a style that can be harmful if you’re not careful. Teetering in high heels is not good for your ankles not to mention how it looks. Skinny, especially those combined with high heels can cause ankle sprains and strains.

Heel Placement

If you can’t stand or walk solidly, skip the shoes. They’re not for you. This includes making sure the heel fits solidly under your heel. You want to avoid the heels that feel like they could break or move slightly out under your heel. They won’t last long.

Padding

This is important so you don’t feel every pebble and grain when walking. Padding also helps the knees and back by absorbing shock. Avoid paper insoles. Go for leather insoles and padding that’s at least a quarter of an inch thick.

The padding should at least extend from the heel to the ball of the foot. Ideally, shoes should have heel-to-toe padding. I’ve found two rare, special brands; Coach (most affordable and you can catch sales in the stores sometimes) and Christian Louboutin (very expensive, but I have seen them discounted on ebay)

Pinching

If a shoe pinches immediately when you try it on, it will most likely continue to pinch. Shoe stretch solutions and gadgets can only do so much. Save yourself the pain and money … keep looking.

Extras

Pretty touches are always a bonus. Mesh rivets, bows, ribbons and cords are nice, unless they hurt. Try the hand test; rub the inside of your hand over the area that will lie against our feet. If the extra touch doesn’t feel soft, almost soothing to your hand, it will hurt your feet.

Make Sure Those Great Buys Are Something You’ll Really Wear … A bargain is no bargain if it’s in the back of your closet.

15 Tips On How To Pick The Best Coat

Posted by admin on October 31st, 2008 — Posted in Civvies

Cruella De Ville must have hit some fashion nerve when she puts on her marvelous fur coat. But we are no Cruella De Ville’s and because of highly revered designers we have now, we don’t have to kill all 101 Dalmatians to make an impression with an overcoat.

You might also want to think twice in putting on those lavish furs she has. A coat is a necessity in the winter season but with just the right amount of being finicky and some sense of style we might just turn this old timer outfit to a fashion statement.

Here are some tips on choosing the best coat.

1. First off, assess your figure.

2. Highlight a good curve with double breasted coat or choose a design where you can overlie the coat and produce a v-neck style.

3. If you are blessed with great hips, accentuate it with a chic shawl coat. Try fur coats that would highlight your hips.

4. On a full breasted figure a turtleneck coat would look formal and sleek; it will make your breast appear an inch or so less.

5. For women more on the petite side do away from bulky coat as it would make you appear shorter. Choose a single-breasted cut coat. Keep it simple and elegant.

6. You can fake an unfavorable figure by choosing a waterfall coat that would just fall down stylishly away from the problem spots.

7. If you go for the classic look, you would never go wrong with black or khaki trench coats over some pair of jeans

8. Your daily activities would also dictate on which coat to pick. Knee length overcoats are best when you drive or if you are more of the always-on-the-go type. Though mid-thigh cut would flatter a tall figure knee lengths thigh is more practical.

9. Aside from the style, coats are primarily made to keep us warm. Thanks for Thinsulate technology, we can now junk the bulky and thick coats and go for coats of synthetic material with slimmer fit with more varied style to choose from. They still provide the same warmth big coats do.

10. In addition with woolen coats they are a wide variety of fiber you can choose from. You can prefer viscose, polyester or plaid for inside linings. Suede and leather exteriors would also do to cope with the winter season.

11. In addition to your well-picked coat you can accessorize by putting on a suitable hat, hand warmers or gloves. Just remember that these should all go with the over-all color scheme or style of your coat.

12. For bargain hunters, you can always opt to shop during the springtime when coats are sold the cheapest.

13. Maintain the condition of your fur by dry cleaning them. Never put them in the washer. Proper storage could keep your coats for a lifetime. Closets should have proper air circulation, preferably 50F humidity to give the coats just the right amount of moisture.

14. Invest your hard earned money to quality clothes. Be practical, choose a durable coat (remember good quality doesn’t always come with a high price tag) that suits your taste which you can wear even for the next winter season.

15. Finally, a good fit is always the standard factor in choosing the best outfit. Be sure there is no awkward space between you and your coat.

When finally deciding on which coat to buy keep in mind that the style you should pick exudes your taste and personality.

Then all other factors come second, including the quality of the coat, the comfort and fit, and lastly its price. So now, for sure, you’ll figure out which coat is best for you. Go get yourself a coat and strut your stuff!

Fashion: Fall - Winter Trends

Posted by admin on October 31st, 2008 — Posted in Civvies

Black, Romance, Volume

Think of Fall - Winter ‘05 fashion trends as the darker, richer version of spring and summer trends: turquoise turns to teal, gauze becomes wool, camisoles become romantic blouses.

While there’s plenty of newness to shop from in the stores (fuller silhouettes) there are also new reasons to buy staples like denim (now it’s embellished).

Designer have revived favorites that make sense to most women such as black (the universal color of chic) and tall boots (no ridiculous bare legs and sandals in freezing weather anymore).

Sample a bit from each Fall - Winter 2005 fashion trend and mix it in a unique way, making it personal with jewelry, color and layering.

Black is the New Black

After seasons of bright colors and white, black reappears as a chic look for everything from dresses to accessories.

Unlike the minimalist appeal of black in the past, black now has pretty embellishments, full volume, soft fabrics and other intriguing details to make it not-so-basic black.
Color Story

Spring and summer’s turquoise has mellowed into a rich teal (also called peacock or Moroccan blue). This pretty blue-green color mixes beautifully with earthy colors and flatters most complexions.

Rich browns also make this season’s must-have list, accented by shots of burnt orange, moss, ginger and other naturally inspired hues.

Romantically Inclined

Soft, sheer blouses in white, black or prints are the top of the season. With bits of lace, velvet, ribbon trims or even puffy sleeves, these romantic tops ( Alight.com) are the perfect layer under fitted velvet jackets.

Retailers are calling this trend “Baroque” or “Renaissance.”

Volume Dressing

Worn with a fitted topper (jacket, shrug, capelet - Designer apparel, footwear and accessories at YOOX) and paired with tall boots, the full skirt takes on a new look for fall.

Volume also comes in full gauchos or culottes, or a loose, dolman-sleeve top.

The key to wearing volume without looking sloppy is to pair a full item with a slim item (dolman-sleeve sweater with skinny jeans or full skirt with a fitted top).

Power Behind the Xbox360

Posted by admin on October 30th, 2008 — Posted in Games + Cheats

Although Microsoft’s Xbox was able to sell millions and millions of units worldwide, it was still considerably outsold by its competitor, Sony’s PlayStation. In this day, wherein another revolution in video and gaming technology is at hand, the Xbox360 is more promising than ever.

What difference does the Xbox360 hold against its predecessor? Well, just like all gaming consoles, it is basically a computer that is designed to run video game programs. The difference is that they focus specifically on this function alone.

So how does the latest model from Microsoft differ from any other gaming console. As was mentioned earlier, the Xbox360 is a computer designed for playing video games. But aside from this, it was also designed to perform as a complete stand alone entertainment system. To break it down, this new console can allow users to connect via a network, it can copy, stream, and download all sorts of media. This would of course include in its arsenal, the ability to download and play HD movies, audio, as well as digital photos and games.

Now, since we know that all gaming consoles are simply computers designed for playing video games, let us take a look at the heart of all computers - the CPU. Just the same, video game consoles have a processor that would, of course, ‘process’ all the information being fed into the system. You could think of it as similar to a car’s engine - it is the one that powers every function of the whole system. The latest innovation in the Xbox360 is that, they “modified the engine” to be able to deliver optimum performance for players.

Traditionally, CPU’s process information via a single path. The more technical term for this is a thread. Now what the latest edition of the Xbox is bragging about is that under its hood, is a processor, or a core, that is able to process 2 threads simultaneously. This means that all the information that is being fed into it, is processed more effectively and efficiently because the “brain” is “multi-tasking”. Meaning, information about sound could be processed via one path, the other for the video graphics, etc. If you’ve ever noticed, past video games would either pause a bit or stutter occasionally. This is because the system is being bombarded by too much information, and it takes time for their ‘brains’ to be able to cope with the demands.

In addition to this, Microsoft has incorporated with this technology, a multi-core system that allows them to integrate more than one processor into a single chip. This is by far the latest innovation by hardware manufacturers - and yes, Microsoft has included it in their new Xbox game console. Having the ability to perform multiple tasks at the same time, it allows the game developers to come with strategies on how to maximize the potential of the machine, to deliver optimum performance.

This is the heart of why the Xbox has evolved to become even more powerful. There’s a lot of other features about the new Xbox360 that definitely boosts its performance. But the heart of all of this, is of course the core that runs everything in it.

Reading Game Choices

Posted by admin on October 28th, 2008 — Posted in Games + Cheats

Are you looking for a reading game to help your child who is just learning to read, or who may be struggling with reading? Even children who love to read can also build skills and knowledge with a good reading game. The good news is that there are a wide variety of games on the market today that will help your child with reading skills and knowledge. The only hard part for you is choosing the best reading game for your child. Here are a few tips:

Choose a game that matches your child’s age and skill level. If you get a reading game that is too easy, then your child will be bored and will not build any skills. If you get a game that is too hard, your child will be frustrated and will not build any skills. Each reading game should be rated for age level on the package, but if your child is struggling, you should also look at the content of the game to make sure that the skills on the game are appropriate. For instance, if your child is just learning to recognize letters, you should not get a game that works on comprehension.

Next, choose a reading game that has more than one skill level or type of activity-a game that will “grow” with your child as they get new knowledge and skills. As your child gets better, it can introduce new rules and obstacles that have to be met and overcome. If there is more than one type of activity, there will be a greater level of interest.

A good place to find a reading game is to look on educational sites. If they do not have games on them already, they may have suggestions, ratings and recommendations for games that will build reading skills in your child. A lot of times the games on these sites are even free.

The last point that you should consider when choosing any educational game for your child, is that you should make sure that it is fun. If it is not fun, your child will not want to play it and it will not do them any good. Whether it is a computer game or a board or card game it should be challenging but not too hard and it should have surprises and incentives that are appealing to the age of child that is playing.

All Susceptible to Spyware

Posted by admin on October 26th, 2008 — Posted in House Of Software, Lots Of Web Resources

If you are one of the millions of people who own a computer and use the Internet, you can get spyware. All are susceptible, none are exempt. It doesn’t matter how careful you are. Even if you visit only the most trusted and respectable websites and download software exclusively from the big-name companies, you can still get spyware. It becomes important that everyone knows how to remove spyware, though it’s easy to fall into the trap of assuming your computer will be fine. Analogously, anyone could get into a car crash, but not everyone takes the time to learn what to do in such an emergency situation. Don’t allow spyware to eventually lead to a crash of a different kind.

Though some spyware is more obvious than others, don’t forget that one of the defining characteristics of spyware is that it is sneaky. The “better” the spyware, the less detectable it is by the average computer user. Don’t think that you can avoid learning how to remove spyware just because you are cautious. Suspicion is not a sufficient enough weapon against spyware. Some toolbars or other programs that are attached to certain free software downloads could be considered adware or spyware. However, it’s not enough just to make sure you uncheck the box to download the additional program or simply stay away from certain freeware altogether. You can still unsuspectingly get spyware in other, stealthier ways.

Roller Rush

Posted by admin on October 25th, 2008 — Posted in Games + Cheats

If you like the game Diner Dash, then you will probably like Roller Rush. The game play is very similar yet the theme is quite different. Roller rush is based on the 50’s theme of drive-in dining. You play as a girl in skates and you need to serve as many customers as you can in order to achieve the money goal for the day. Achieving your goal gives you stars. You can then use these stars to purchase different upgrades. You can choose to immediately use up your stars on upgrades or you can wait for them to accumulate in order to get better upgrades. You can also get bonus points by completing a roll - same task done in succession. The longer the roll, the more money you get.

Roller Rush is a game of skill and strategy as well as fast reflexes. The game starts out easy, with good time spacing between customers. The higher the level, however, the more customers you get and the faster they come. There are different types of customers - some more impatient that others. You tend to get the more impatient ones at the higher levels.

The overall theme of the game is a treat, especially if you are into retro. You have a jukebox that plays music in the background throughout the game. It uses a default playlist. However, you can tweak the game and have the jukebox play your own mp3s stored on your hard drive! Now you can play and listen to music at the same time.

The graphics are not spectacular but they suit the game very well. They are pleasing to the eyes and different animations make for a good gaming experience. As opposed to many other games out in the market, the content is kid friendly. You have to be a little bit older than a “kid” to be able to beat the game, though. For the not-so-skilled players, there comes a point in the game wherein you just cannot seem to handle all the customers and earn enough money in a day. It’s either you step up or lose all your lives.

Weaponizing Micro Air Vehicles

Posted by admin on October 24th, 2008 — Posted in Games + Cheats

The age of the flying hand grenade is almost upon us, but how will hand grenades ever fly? Well the fact is they already do. You see the enemy, that is to say the enemy insurgents sponsored and paid for by Iran fighting to destabilize Iraq are using RPGs or rocket propelled grenades. And of course the US troops have hand grenades also. But in the near future small UAVs Unmanned Aerial Vehicles will carry lightweight hand grenades and deliver them like a miniature WWII remote control model aircraft.

Eventually even smaller single mission MAVs or micro-air vehicles will fly to the enemy and blow up like a miniature Kamikaze remote control model aircraft. When is all this taking place? Well both sides are working on these things now, but of course the United States is well ahead of the other foreign army research teams.

Is this a new idea? Oh heavens no. You see, even Tom Clancy discussed this in one of his novels. Little dragon fly micro-air vehicles would sit by the enemy runway and wait until the enemy fighters took off and they fly above the run way and get sucked into the jet intakes and explode, taking down a multi-million dollar fighter aircraft in seconds. Now consider this technique on an advancing army or group of international terrorists along side a road waiting to ambush American Troops? The flying dragonflies would see them, fly over there and explode, end of insurgents? Consider this in 2006.

The PSP Report Card - One Year Later

Posted by admin on October 23rd, 2008 — Posted in Games + Cheats

Well folks, the psp has now been out for about one year and its time to take a look at how it has done and whether or not it lived up to its expectations. All in all, I would say that the graphics on mostly any psp game definitely looked awesome. Its hard to believe how far technology has actually come over the years. It doesn’t seem that long ago when I can remember playing Tetris on my gameboy and i thought that was the best thing since sliced bread. Boy have we come along way, huh.

One disappointment I had with the average psp game is that most of them were just a copycat of games already out there for the ps2. Not that this is such a bad thing, because there are many excellent ps2 games which did translate to an excellent psp game, but I would just like to see some more originality for this system. How about using the psp to its full potential? Come on you software designers, lets see a new idea for a psp game once in awhile!

When questioned about this, some of the developers blamed it on lack of time, and that they were also busy with ongoing ps2 projects, so sometimes a psp game would have to take a back seat.

The good news is from what I’ve been reading is that they are really looking to expand the psp experience with new original titles and not the same old psp game that is already out there and played into the ground on ps2. So we will keep our fingers crossed and see what the future holds and keep our eye out for some new original games for the psp.
